Whilst we’re not officially an organic producer we don’t use any pesticides or chemicals on any of our crops. Instead our approach is best summarised as “healthy horticulture”, which means that we very much work in harmony with nature.
Although this process is much more labour intensive the results are that we produce consistently delicious fruit and vegetables that are full of flavour.
The Walled Kitchen Garden today doesn’t look so very different from how it was in 1738, when it was completed, although we are purposefully leaving around a quarter of the area free for a variety of events that we will be hosting in the future.
The produce is sold in The Garden Shop and used in The Tea Room; in the longer-term we will be using the fruit and vegetables in The Vinery Restaurant, which we’re actively planning for.
Anyone wishing to become involved in the upkeep of the garden, or in being a guide to the public, should contact the Estate Office.
The Tea Room and Garden Shop are open 11.00 am to 4.30 pm, Wednesdays to Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays, from Good Friday to the end of September. The working areas of the garden are open during these times on an honesty box system. Entry is at visitors' own risk, and a board provides guidance on safety and other matters. Leaflets are available inside the shop.
Guided tours are available to groups by appointment (call 01785-850820), giving information on the history, the garden as it is now, and on its future. There are full facilities for school groups, and ideas for QCA Units are listed under the Education and Learning Page.
No dogs within the walls except guide dogs.
